Norman found Barry Potty-mouth by midafternoon. He was sitting on a bench under the olive trees outside Gino’s. Norman slid in beside him.

‘Who are you?’ said Barry, pleased to have the company.

‘Norman.’

‘Got a job?’

‘Yeah, I’m a … writer.’ It sounded less threatening than reporter. Or so he hoped.

‘Another one?’ said Barry. ‘Fucking heaps of the bastards up and down here. Drink coffee all day long and talk about themselves nonstop. Never see them writing though.’

‘Probably doing research, or having meetings.’

‘Yeah, must be.’ Barry looked at him. ‘Run out of money for your coffee, have you? Don’t ask me, I’m skint.’

‘Actually,’ said Norman ‘I was going to offer to buy you one.’

Barry shook his head. ‘Hate the stuff. Makes me teeth brown and smells like the hostel on a hot day.’

‘Tea?’

‘Now you’re talking.’ He stood up and shuffled over to an outside table at the cafe. ‘Research is it?’

‘Yep.’

‘So the poncy waiters can’t tell me to fuck off then, can they?’

‘That’s right,’ said Norman.

‘Sweet. Earl Grey, please. And one of those Florentines while you’re at it.’
